Tackling the existential threats we face, so we can avoid a ghastly future.

About

In 2021, seventeen prominent scientists issued a warning to humanity.

In their paper Underestimating the Challenges of Avoiding a Ghastly Future, they highlight the lack of appreciation for just how dire our situation is.

"Humanity is running an ecological Ponzi scheme in which society robs nature and future generations to pay for boosting incomes in the short term."

In brief

Future conditions will be far more dangerous than currently believed

The mainstream is having difficulty grasping the magnitude of this loss

Our systems and leaders are not prepared to handle the oncoming disaster

With limited capacity of making prudent, long-term decisions

An extraordinary responsibility lies with scientists to speak candidly

A fine balance without inducing disproportionate feelings of despair

"Only a realistic appreciation of the colossal challenges facing the international community might allow it to chart a less-ravaged future."

Tell it
like it is

The paper is not a call to surrender—it’s aim is to provide leaders with a realistic “cold shower” of the state of the planet that is essential for planning to avoid a ghastly future.

It is also a call to action for experts in any discipline that deals with the future of the biosphere and human well-being to “tell it like it is.”
